History

The International Organization History:

After 80 years as Sweet Adelines International, we’re singing into a new chapter as SingUnited International.

We’re singers united—bringing connection, friendship, and music to the world!

Founded in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1945, Sweet Adelines began as a small group of women who loved to sing.
Since then, it has grown into a global organization, connecting thousands of singers worldwide through song.

Continuing in 2026 as SingUnited International, we remain dedicated to preserving the unique sound of a cappella barbershop harmony, sharing our passion for music, and empowering our community in every area of their lives!

Sweet Adelines in Australia

On 6th October 1983, with just 23 members, we were the first Sweet Adelines Chorus to be chartered in Australia under the name ‘Yarra Valley Chapter of Sweet Adelines’.

On 29th October 1983, the Australian flag flew proudly alongside other international flags outside the International headquarters of Sweet Adelines Inc. in Tulsa, USA.

A small passionate group of members were instrumental in spreading the word about the joys of singing barbershop a cappella during those formative years, countrywide.

During the 1986/87 Sweet Adelines year, the Chorus changed its name to ‘The Melbourne Chapter of SAI’. As other choruses were forming in Western Australia, New South Wales and Queensland our name change clearly identified and connected us to Melbourne and the state of Victoria.

Early on, the Australian (Southern Cross, Region 34) Sweet Adeline national competitions were held every 2 years. The first one being held in Geelong, Victoria.  This has since changed to an annual event at varied locations and states.

Today

In Australia, there are now over 1100 members in 26 choruses spread around the country.  Members sing in choruses and quartets, performing regularly in public and competing at regional and international levels.

During our vibrant history, Melbourne Chorus has won many awards. We have proudly represented the Australian region at International competition in Indianapolis, Las Vegas, twice, and Denver.  These have been wonderful experiences and memories for our members and families.  We enjoy performing in our own shows, for corporate, community and private events.
